Brighid's Hearth
Our handfasting in May 2001 was a very small affair. Siona, our dog, was our witness. Cat arranged to fly back to Scotland from a stay in the States so that we could be together to renew our handfasting vows. We had decided to spend a few days away from Stirling and drove up to Drumnadrochit for a mini-break. While there, we explored the nature refuge in Glen Affric.

Glen Affric is beautiful. The nature reserve extends for miles and runs along Loch Affric and Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin. We drove out to one of the back walks and went exploring. We had plans to return to a chambered cairn we'd found the day before in order to do our handfasting, but when we stumbled upon this hidden pool amongst the heather, we knew it was the right place.

The pool struck us both as being a mystical place. It was well off the path, and we can't even remember how we found it. But there is was amongst the heather and gorse. The air around it seemed still and it felt like a cathedral. Truly magical. We held each other's hands and made our promises for another year. Then we crept away, taking with us the calm serenity of that pool.

There aren't many pictures of us. Siona isn't good with a camera.
